Bryan Burger On The Age of Style
Nov 22nd
Here’s a man who’s been instrumental to the Malaysian dance scene. Artiste, businessman, DJ, and tutor, Bryan Burger is one of those guys who deserves a lifetime achievement award. His career dates back to Valentine’s Day in 1998. He started off as a resident DJ with rave and event organiser Tempo, then ventured into a record store business and his own events company called Excessive Records. As a DJ, he has warmed up the decks for BT, Sasha, Digweed, Sven Vath, Roger Sanchez, Sander Klinenberg, Sister Bliss, and BT, amongst others. It was his national service at Movement Club that really put the Burger-man on the map and gained him recognition and street credit among clubbers, suits, and DJs alike. And his been a regular line up in a long list of the best of the best events. So Burger finally finds time to talk to Radio KUL Extra.

Bryan Burger. The legend. It feels like you’ve seen it all, and done it all. What are you currently up to ?
Right…..currently we’ve been busy (searching the) international club scene / culture / market and some new deco technology (for) our local market in the future. (Besides) that, we’re still pushing up more new talents and young blood to (represent) us and move forward (the) Excessive soundsystem (over the next few years). Been busy (working on the) Excessive Records online blog and (we) promise to bring in more new DJ products.
Tell us about Excessive Records.
(We sell DJ equipment based on fair pricing, informed reviews, and a well researhed selection of “Excessive approved’ items. 90% of our employees are working DJs, producers, and musicians. We also sell records, production equipment, clothing, accessories, etc. We’re a recognised leader and tastemaker in the Malaysian market. We’ve been operating since 1999 and in December 2005, we opened our flagship Royale DJ Academy in Kuala Lumpur.)
Could you describe the atmosphere of your live gigs in 3 words.
Intergalactic, Action!, Jacking.
One of the first live shows you organise involved BT. Are you guys still in touch and what’s he been up to ?
Err…..this is cool. (Haven’t kept) in touch with BT since after his debut album “Moment In Still Life” (and) being live in KL. The last news that I read from (a) mag is about his studio being (broken into) by some thief, and all his new productions, machine, and work (were) stolen after that.
Malaysian clubbers. In it for the music or will party to any form of noise ?
(I’ll describe it in) 3 words : AGE OF STYLE. We need young blood to push the future sound of KL, Malaysia.
DJs who don’t mix. The new twist or the death penalty ?
(For the) DJs who don’t mix, it depends on what kind of DJ he/she is ? A radio DJ ? They don’t mix while (their) on air everyday. (Maybe) it’s a new twist of (clubbing) taste. Or maybe they get their (DJing) knowledge from (MTV / CHANNEL V) or (use) some cheating DJ controller or product.
If you could change 3 things about the Malaysian dance scene, what would it be ?
(A) warehouse project, club hour rules, (and) even (a) jungle rave.
You meet a lot of aspiring DJs. What styles of music is the most popular ?
House, trance, electro, teachno and of couse Hip Hop Hooray. And a new subgenre called New Rave.
Should somebody who has no means of buying records or DJ gear still pursuit an interest of becoming a DJ ?
Why not. (For) most of the people who (are die hard music fans), (it depends on) how they think about (getting it done) and who they (want to) be in the future. (Just) keep learning (and always) practice practice practice.
In your opinion, what are the probable odds of making it succesful as a fulltime DJ in Malaysia ? What will be important to venture into this scene ?
I never think (much) about (becoming) a succesful fulltime DJ. Most of my time (is) being fully used on my own personal production / work, my studio / shop, and my hobby. The most important thing is (to) keep (promoting) your music and production to the world or even organize more events for yourself. Build your name to let more people know about you and your sound. (It’s) not about the (money), (women), or the benefits to act cool. :) Most importantly, (when you) venture into this scene, (support) your own local act / artiste.
Bryan Burger. Said and done. Thanks !
