His signature blend of dirty thumping basslines combined with elements of trance has spawned tracks such as “Miss You,” “Taxi,” “Back Stab,” “Bulldozer” and “For The Most Part,” all of which have found firm appeal by the critical EDM community. Simon Patterson is in town this weekend for a show not to be missed, and his remix for John Askew “Blackout” has already seen support from the world’s finest, a list that he too is part of (Patterson is a Top 100 global DJ). He is the pioneer of the rough edge of trance, and we are extremely excited to have him on our soil, so here he is for this exclusive Extra interview.

Simon Patterson

Simon Patterson, thanks for the opportunity to speak with you. Where are you currently, and what has been a recent highlight?
I am currently in London. My recent highlight was Eurofest in Mexico with Sean Tyas and BAT2 in Buenos Aires Argentina. Outstanding events!

Your remix of “Black Out” by John Askew is now out on Discover and it’s getting a lot of support. How did this remix come about?
John asked me to do it for him. I never do remixes but I decided to do this for John. I just experimented with the track, followed no formula with very little trance. In a club it works well. “Taxi” is also receiving so much of positive feedback. What was the idea behind this tune? There wasn’t any real idea. It’s the follow up to “Thump” so just following on from that…

And of course, we have to ask you about “Miss You.” We’re sure this is on many fans’ bookmarks, and it’s been nominated in the Beatport Music Awards 2010. Is this one of your all time favourite productions?
I like it but it’s not my fave. That track took so long to make, when you hear it constantly you lose the magic sometimes and almost get bored. Glad you guys like it though!

Your take on trance is completely different than the staple. How would you define the influences that you’ve combined together with usual trance that usually gets turned into big records.
It’s psy infused trance. That’s where my ideas come from. Listening to psy…

When you do find time between tours, how else do you keep busy, besides making music? Any other interests?
The same I guess as most people, dinner, gym and sleep!

“For The Most Part” is one of our personal favourites. We know Sean Tyas and you are good friends, but together you both put together a very interesting track that appealed to all music lovers. We’re curious to know who lends the vocals on this one?
A friend of mine called David Wright.

Are you excited about your gig here in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia? What can fans expect from the gig?
The usual selection of trance, techno and a bit of psy.

What else is planned for the rest of 2010? Any upcoming gigs or releases that we should know about?
Ibiza starts soon. So I’m just gearing up for the summer months of festivals and Ibiza.

And lastly, any message to your loyal fans reading this from all over the world!
Thanks for all your support and I look forward to seeing some of you soon!
